The Fashioning of Hollywood
It seems wherever you look; fashion and film go hand in hand. From the birth of the modern film industry, high fashion has featured as inspiration, subject and runway platform. Today the bonds of fashion and cinema have reached new creative heights, with a wave of fashion related movie projects including designer Tom Ford’s recent directorial debut.
The marriage of fashion and film has predominately been coupled by the modern PR empire. Hollywood is a place of glitz, glamour, artistry… and money.
The publicity of brands, products and films have become unabashedly interwoven. But that is not to say that this hybrid western culture does not provide new platforms for creative collaboration!
Fashion Makes the Boxoffice
The fashion industry has always been one of supreme interest to filmmakers. The intriguing stylish world of high fashion has become a subject for documentaries, designer bios and blockbusters alike. In recent years we have seen a cinematic surge in fashion-related features, from Valentino to Coco Avant Chanel.

One fashion icon that has recently inspired Hollywood, is Editor in Chief of American Vogue Anna Wintour. The candid documentary The September Issue released in 2009, offered a rare insight into the ice queen of the international fashion world, and proved a box office sensation. The blockbuster The Devil Wears Prada starring Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, was indisputably based on Anna Wintour, with the film based on the book by Wintour’s ex-assistant!

The Film Star as Fashion Muse
Since the golden era of 1950s Hollywood, fashion designers have been enthralled by the beauty and ethereal status of acting stars. The classic example is of course Audrey Hepburn’s enduring collaboration with Herbert Givenchy. Hepburn wore Givenchy’s show-stopping designs for many of her iconic film roles, including the memorable Little Black Dress (giving way to the cult of the LBD) in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Red Carpet Mania
The hype surrounding the slew of film award ceremonies is always eclipsed by the red carpet fashions. Who is wearing what… Who is their designer… Who is best dressed?? Asked who won the best actress academy awards over the years, the couture they wore for the ceremony seems as important as the statuette they held.

The 2001 Best Actress Oscar was won for the first time by an African American woman. Halle Berry took the award for her performance in Monster’s Ball, yet it seemed the achievement was put alongside designer Ellie Saab’s own triumph in the dress she wore. Saab’s fashion career was catapulted into new heights of success from the publicity Berry offered.
The red carpet trends continue with the lead up to the Academy Awards in March, the latest fashion media frenzy has popped up from the BAFTA ceremony.
