When you are inspired by a makeup look, whether it is 1950s femme fatale or glamorous goddess, often when you get in front of the bathroom mirror it’s less simple to make it become a reality. Within ten minutes, the mascara has poked you in the eye, the bronzer over done and the red lipstick smudged!
Renowned Australian makeup artist and founder of the leading beauty brand, Napoleon Perdis, has been demystifying the world of makeup since he was just 13, helping his mother to get ready for a soiree. Today, he is makeup master to the stars, and his brand seeks to help transform catwalk looks into reality.
With just a few hints, and great basic products you can achieve the ultimate party look… without the bathroom mishaps! We deconstruct four hot makeup looks from the Rosemount Australian Fashion Week 2010 collections, so you can emulate your favourite icons…
With the Nicola Finetti Spring Summer 2010-11 collection at RAFW, came elegant cocktail pieces and a celebration of every girl’s wardrobe necessity: the Little Black Dress. The LBD came to fame in the 1950s with Audrey Hepburn’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s Givenchy dresses, and the petite beauty has inspired fashion and makeup up for the last 60 years.
Complementing his elegant runway collection, Finetti’s models wore subtle bronzed paletes with defined eyebrows and dusted cheek bones. The best way to achieve this classic look with a slightly modern twist is to focus on accentuated eyebrows. Using a brow liner is a great way to groom eyebrows, which will automatically define your eyes.
As Perdis says, “Don’t let your brows take a beating. Use a precision liner”. His Super Precise Brow Liner works to amplify sparse brows and create a natural textured look.
TIP: Scribble the brow liner on the back of your hand, then use a stiff angled brush to apply the colour. Touch up individual hairs with the pencil, finish by blending it all together with a brow brush… and instant Audrey appeal!
60s Bubblegum Fun
The Anna & Boy swimwear collection for RAFW 2010, was a super cute and cheeky affair, with winking models and pastel swim caps. The accompanying makeup was bright and fun with pastel blues and bubblegum pinks, not to mention drawn on freckles! Reminiscent of early 1960s beach babe, the big lashes and eye shadow gave a nod to the decade’s model muse Twiggy.
Going for a sweet but sexy makeup look is always complete with big flirty eyelashes. No girl’s makeup bag would be complete without a voluminous mascara, perfect for battering those eyelids! Perdis candidly describes his Mesmer-Eyes Mascara as “like a miracle bra for your lashes”. The magical mascara works to add volume, length and bouncy curl all at once to your lashes, and comes in waterproof if you decide to go for a swim.
TIP: The Mesmer-Eyes Mascara has two combs, use the wide side to boost the lashes, then switch to the define side to separate each lash into that perfect Twiggy look.
With a sleek night on the city planned, women want to make a statement to match that new black outfit. Fernando Frisoni transformed his runway into a lustrous cityscape for the urban trendsetter for his Spring-Summer 2010-11 collection. With structured outfits in blocks of colour and unique bold prints, Frisoni brought out sultry midnight eyes to accompany his cocktail pieces. Beyonce is known for her dramatic diva performances, with theatrical clothing mixed with urban chic.
With some sexy sparkle colour and mascara in tow, a dramatic black eyeliner is needed to transform your eyes. Perdis decrees, “embrace the new line of beauty” with his new Neo Noir Liquid Liner. The liner is perfect for a dramatic sultry effect, and has a unique waterproof formula deigned to last more than 6 hours, perfect for a big party night!
TIP: Liquid liner has a more precisioned non-smudged effect than pencils, and is ideal for creating a modern cat-eyed look to outline the eyes.
Avatar mania struck the country this year, as Matt Cameron’s film took the largest ever box office grossing, and unleashed the inspirations of Pandora worldwide. The Haute Couture shows in Paris for Spring-Summer 2010 displayed homages to the world of Avatar, including Valentino, Jean-Paul Gaultier and Armani Privé. The Rosemount Australian Fashion Week followed suit, with Bianca Spender and Camilla Franks collections using bright coloured tribal clothing and makeup. Spender used creative feather applications for model’s eyebrows, with eclectic blue lined eyes to match.
The Aztec-tribal look can be used to create a makeup statement day and night, mix it with a bohemian skirt by day, or party dress by night. The key is to choose a bright liner that accentuates your eyes; as Perdis suggests, “the windows to the soul require an equally beautiful frame”. His Natural Kohl Eyeliner is a soft creamy liner that comes in a range of kaleidoscope colours such as Bottle Green and Blue Denim.
TIP: After lining your eyes, smudge the pencil with a brush for a statement-making smoky finish.
